Our bees produce a lot of propolis in the hives as a natural defence mechanism against invaders and disease. Propolis is a substance made by the bees that provides natural protection against harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. Propolis is the natural resin from the trees and the bees collect to use around the beehive, and we believe our bees collect very quality propolis.

There are many compounds in propolis identified, such as flavonoids. Theses are well known to have anti-oxidant, anti-fungal antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Other properties of propolis that will help enhance your health that it is unique in that it will kill both bacteria and viruses.

A UMF® 5 rating or more is suitable for treating infections:

  • Treatment of ulcers, even those resistant to other medical interventions.
  • Wound healing.
  • Treatment of Burns.

Special about UMF® Manuka Honey

Laboratory studies have shown that UMF® Manuka Honey is effective against a wide range of very resistant bacteria including the major wound-infecting bacteria and the stomach ulcer causing bacteria helicobacter pylori.

How is UMF® tested?

A sample will be taken out of every single batch of Haddrell’s manuka honey. This sample will then be sent to an independent laboratory that has been approved by the University of Waikato and they will measure the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) in the honey.

What the tests look for is to measure the honey against the “Phenyl standard”. It’s a standard verified, validated, tested used in scientific testing throughout the world. A report will be given showing the value of UMF rating for that particular batch. What we are looking for on the report is the UMF rating.

Dr. Peter Molan assessed that a honey that has a UMF rating of 10 or more will assist medicinally, and that’s the honey we can brand. We brand it using a UMF 16+ on our products. Each batch will then have its own certified UMF report that we can give to our customers.
